In an exclusive and candid conversation with Hyderabad Times, Vishwak Sen speaks openly about the significant milestone of hitting 30, the enduring friendships that anchor him, navigating the film industry as a self-made outsider, and his steadfast philosophy of letting his work speak louder than the surrounding noise.
Embracing Discipline and Focus in His Thirties
After several years of relentless, back-to-back film releases, Vishwak Sen made a conscious decision to step away from the industry churn to focus intensely on personal growth. "I decided to take a year-long break from releasing films. I was still involved in shooting projects here and there, but previously, I would typically have two or three releases every single year, which left no genuine time to focus on a meaningful physical transformation. This time, I consciously and deliberately slowed down," he explains.
"Turning 30 hit me profoundly hard. It was a genuine wake-up call. Until I was 29, I often felt like I was still 21, but hitting my thirties made me realise I urgently needed structure, discipline, and sharp focus," Vishwak reveals. His commitment was unwavering: he eliminated carbs and sugar, committed to two rigorous hours of workout daily, and incorporated an additional hour of horse riding. Following this strict regime consistently for six to seven months enabled him to shed an impressive 13 kilograms and completely transformed his perspective on fitness and self-discipline.
Hyderabad: The Unwavering Home and Creative Muse
Deeply and authentically rooted in Hyderabad, Vishwak Sen continues to draw creative inspiration from the city's rich lived experiences and its diverse people. "Hyderabad is home in every conceivable sense. I was born in Gandhi Hospital and raised entirely in Dilsukhnagar. I know its every corner and its people intimately. I'm still close friends with those I used to play cricket with during my younger years," he shares warmly.
"After I transitioned into becoming a director, whenever I make a film here, I consciously bring local residents into the creative fold. In Falaknuma Das, most of the on-screen faces were individuals living that very story off-screen too. Hyderabadis, with their inherent warmth and remarkable willingness to collaborate, that's the authentic pulse I always strive to capture in my cinematic projects," Vishwak emphasizes, highlighting his deep connection to the city's cultural fabric.
Evolving Awareness and Responsibility in Filmmaking
Seven years on, Ee Nagaraniki Emaindhi remains a definitive marker in his professional journey, profoundly shaping both his career trajectory and his personal outlook. "I often conceptualize my life as 'Vishwak before ENE' and 'Vishwak after ENE.' Back then, I embraced success without fear; today, every single project carries significant responsibility, heightened awareness, and the constant need to evolve and improve," he reflects thoughtfully.
"Vivek, the character I portrayed, reflects aspects of my own guarded, selfless nature. As we commenced shooting the sequel, I experienced genuine worry about whether I could authentically inhabit him again. But within mere minutes on set, it felt completely seamless and natural. In this new film, Vivek has moved forward from his past breakup, and the narrative opens with his second film's pre-release party, symbolizing a fresh, exciting chapter in his life," Vishwak elaborates on his character's evolution.
Layering Drama into Every Narrative
With his highly anticipated upcoming film Cult, Vishwak Sen leans fully into his instinct for layered, high-energy storytelling. "When I first began writing Cult, I drew initial inspiration from Project X, which gradually evolved into something that feels uniquely like Project X meets Squid Game," he describes the film's creative genesis.
"As a filmmaker, I've always been intrinsically drawn to drama; not necessarily in personal life, but unequivocally on screen. Whether it's crafting a love story, a thriller, or a comedy, I passionately love layering in compelling drama, and Cult possesses a substantial amount of that dynamic energy," Vishwak states, outlining his directorial philosophy. The film is an action-slasher centered around a chaotic "Goa party gone wrong," promising intense narrative layers.
