In a major move for Indian television, Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) has secured the rights to adapt the globally celebrated game show, Wheel of Fortune, for the Indian audience. The network has announced that Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar will be the face and host of this highly anticipated Indian edition.
A Global Television Phenomenon Comes to India
The original Wheel of Fortune is not just any game show; it is an entertainment institution. Recognized globally as one of the most successful franchises, it holds the prestigious Guinness World Record for the world's most popular TV game show. The show has also been named the most-watched entertainment program on American television by Variety and has clinched multiple Daytime Emmy Awards.
This landmark adaptation is slated for a grand launch in 2026 and is positioned as a flagship prime-time property for the network. It represents one of SPNI's most significant integrated launches, aiming to bridge traditional television viewership with modern digital engagement.
Akshay Kumar's Television Power and Cross-Platform Strategy
SPNI's choice of host leverages Akshay Kumar's proven track record on the small screen. The network highlighted the actor's consistently high ratings for his movie premieres on satellite television in recent years. Kumar expressed his enthusiasm for bringing the puzzle-based game to India, emphasizing its wide appeal.
"Wheel of Fortune has been enjoyed by millions across the world, and I'm confident Indian audiences will connect with its thrill and simplicity," Kumar stated. He further pointed out that the show's unique cross-platform presence on both TV and digital would offer viewers a novel way to interact with the content.
The Indian version will air on Sony Entertainment Television and stream simultaneously on Sony LIV. The digital platform will feature an interactive 'Play Along' feature, allowing audiences at home to participate in the game in real-time, blending mass reach with direct interactivity.
Reinforcing a Strategy of Proven Global Formats
Nachiket Pantvaidya, Business Head of Sony Entertainment Television, explained that this launch is a key part of the network's strategy to introduce internationally successful formats to the Indian market. "With Wheel of Fortune, we are adding another marquee international IP to our portfolio, creating a powerful engagement and brand-building platform across television and digital," he said.
The production of the Indian Wheel of Fortune is a collaborative effort. The format is licensed by Highgate Entertainment, LLC, while Frames Production Company will produce the show for Sony Pictures Networks India.
This adaptation is set to test the waters for high-profile international game show formats in India, banking on the combined star power of Akshay Kumar and the legendary status of Wheel of Fortune to capture the imagination of a multi-generational Indian audience.
