Speaking with Deadline, Marinis candidly discussed the cliffhanger of the season 22 finale and the future of the characters. Regarding Meredith and Nick's surprise proposal, the showrunner noted that it was a deliberate choice, even though Meredith never desired marriage after Derek's death. She explained, 'I think marriage is not something ingrained in her, but when she heard the story of how he wanted to get married in the middle of the season, when his sister visited, and how his sister had taken away this happy life from him, I think that got planted in her mind as something he always wanted.'
Harry Shum Jr. and his character Kwan were also a hot topic, with his return still uncertain. Marinis said, 'His fate is still undecided. Blue is scared out of his mind, so we'll have to see when we return in the fall. He doesn't have a job at Grey Sloan right now, so we'll see what happens to him.'
