Despite a celebrated career on Indian television that spans over two decades, actress Rinku Dhawan reveals a persistent barrier in the entertainment industry: a reluctance from OTT platforms to cast actors from the TV world. The actress, known for her resilient performances, has actively auditioned and even personally reached out to casting directors for digital roles, but success has remained elusive.
The Invisible Wall: OTT Platforms and Television Actors
Rinku Dhawan's experience highlights a perceived divide between television and digital streaming spaces. She expresses her frustration, questioning, "If OTT has built these walls saying they don't want television actors, what can one do?" This sentiment comes after extensive efforts on her part to break into the OTT scene, which have yet to yield a role. Her candid admission sheds light on a broader industry bias that many television artists potentially face.
Overcoming Personal Tragedy and Financial Crisis
Her professional challenges are set against a backdrop of profound personal hardship. Between 2017 and 2021, Rinku endured an extremely difficult phase. This period saw the loss of her father, the end of her marriage through a divorce, and severe emotional and financial turmoil. "I was jobless and in debts. It was a tough period, but I never gave up. I'm glad I managed to bounce back," she shares, reflecting on a time that tested her resilience to the core.
The Turnaround: From Chhoti Sarrdaarni to Anupamaa
The road to recovery began with the television show Chhoti Sarrdaarni. "The show brought my first significant paycheck in three-and-a-half years," Rinku recalls. This marked the start of a steady comeback. Her participation in the reality show Bigg Boss followed, which she credits with helping her regain her footing. "I think Bigg Boss helped me get back on my feet. Also, I was not expecting to go on for very long but people liked me in the house," she said.
Subsequent roles in popular series like Udaariyaan and Megha Barsenge brought much-needed stability back into her life. Today, audiences see her in the hit show Anupamaa, where she enjoys playing a layered character. She clarifies, "I have a layered role in Anupamaa and it is not really in the negative space."
Rinku also fondly remembers how she proactively texted producers Ravi and Sargun expressing her desire to work with them, which eventually led to her role in Udaariyaan.
Through all her trials, Rinku Dhawan has emerged stronger. She expresses deep gratitude for her current peace and stability. "Life has not been easy, but Mahadev has always been there. I'm in a calm space now and not seeking anything. I enjoy what I do and I prefer to live in the moment," she concludes, embodying a spirit of perseverance and present-mindedness that defines her journey.
