Centre Issues Directive to Netflix Over Ghooskhor Pandat Promotional Content
In a significant development, the Centre has formally directed streaming giant Netflix to remove the teaser and all other promotional materials for the upcoming film Ghooskhor Pandat, starring Manoj Bajpayee. This action comes amid escalating controversy surrounding the film's title, which has been criticized as hurtful and disrespectful by various sections of society.
Backlash and Initial Response
The film landed in hot water shortly after its teaser release, with opponents decrying the title as offensive. In response to the mounting backlash, filmmaker Neeraj Pandey issued a public apology and announced the withdrawal of all promotional content from social media platforms. However, the government has now stepped in, mandating Netflix to comply with the removal order.
A senior BJP leader confirmed the swift action, stating to PTI, "Taking swift action in the matter, the Centre has asked Netflix to remove the teaser and all other promotional content of the film. Anything that is against any society is completely unacceptable." BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia praised the move on social media, emphasizing the party's commitment to taking strict action against content that demeans any caste or community for commercial gains.
Legal and Regulatory Scrutiny
The controversy has triggered multiple legal and regulatory proceedings. An FIR was registered at Hazratganj Police Station in Lucknow against the makers, alleging that the film's title hurts religious and caste sentiments. Additionally, a writ petition was filed before the Delhi High Court seeking a stay on the film's release, citing communal offensiveness.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has also intervened, issuing a notice to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting after receiving a complaint that claimed the title "promotes negative stereotypes" and "vilifies a recognised social group." The complaint, filed by Sanjeev Newar of Gems of Bollywood, alleges that the film contains casteist and discriminatory content, reflecting gross insensitivity towards India's social fabric.
Title Authorization Dispute
Adding to the turmoil, the makers have faced criticism for allegedly failing to obtain mandatory permission for the film's title. The Film Makers Combine (FMC), a Mumbai-based organization, raised objections and issued notices to both the production house and Netflix. According to FMC, the unauthorized use of the title violates its rules and regulations, as no application was made for Ghooskhor Pandat.
Neeraj Pandey had earlier clarified on Instagram that the film is a fictional cop drama, with the term "Pandat" used as a colloquial name for a character, not intended to represent any caste or community. He expressed regret over the hurt caused and announced the temporary removal of promotional materials to allow the film to be experienced in its full context.
With the teaser now removed per the Centre's directive, Ghooskhor Pandat remains under intense scrutiny as legal battles and regulatory reviews continue, casting uncertainty over its future release on Netflix.
