Priya Mani Raj Reflects on Bollywood Debut, OTT Success, and Personal Growth
With acclaimed web series such as The Family Man and The Good Wife, actress Priya Mani Raj has forged a powerful new connection with audiences across India. While she has been a prominent figure in South Indian cinema for years, the digital entertainment space has dramatically expanded her reach, making her a pan-India star.
High Hopes for Bollywood Debut in Raavan
However, her journey into Hindi cinema began much earlier with Mani Ratnam's film Raavan. When questioned about whether she had high expectations from her Bollywood debut, Priya Mani candidly shares, "Yes, I did. I was brought up watching Hindi films, so when I received an offer to perform in the Hindi version of Raavan, I was absolutely thrilled."
She elaborates on the experience, stating, "I had the opportunity to act alongside Abhishek Bachchan and many wonderful actors like Ravi Kishan and Pankaj Tripathi. I was very happy during that period. Although I did not share scenes with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, I met her during promotional events, and she was incredibly warm and welcoming."
Selective Career Choices After Initial Success
Reflecting on her career trajectory post-Raavan, Priya Mani reveals, "Honestly, I did anticipate receiving more offers after that project. However, I was quite selective in my approach. I received some offers that genuinely appealed to me and others that I was not entirely convinced about, so I decided to keep them at a distance."
She adds, "I was not disappointed because my schedule was already packed with South Indian film commitments. My career in the South provided me with ample opportunities, allowing me to be discerning about my projects in Hindi cinema."
Learning the Ropes Without Industry Guidance
Opening up about her initial years in the entertainment industry, Priya Mani reflects on navigating her career without any formal mentorship. She says, "When I look back at my old photographs or early films, I often wonder, 'Why was I like this?' But it is all part of a natural learning process. Nobody is perfect when they start out."
She recalls, "Back then, I did not even understand what grooming truly meant. I began my career at the age of 18, and no one in my family had any connections to the film industry. I did not have a godfather to guide me, so I relied entirely on my instincts—a practice I continue to this day."
Priya Mani laughs as she shares, "I was unaware that you could hire a personal makeup artist, a hairstylist, or even someone referred to as a stylist. My peers had friends assisting them with styling, while I had to figure things out independently through trial and error."
Embracing Self-Care and Personal Investment
It was much later in her career that Priya Mani began to comprehend the importance of self-care and personal presentation. She explains, "It was only around 2011 or 2012 that I realized you could actually hire a professional stylist or collaborate with a designer to curate your wardrobe. This was a significant revelation for me."
She credits her husband, Mustafa, with helping her embrace this aspect of her life, stating, "After I started dating Mustafa, I learned to invest in myself—to prioritize looking good, scheduling manicures and pedicures, taking better care of myself, and ensuring I always appear presentable." The Jawan actress concludes by emphasizing how this personal growth has complemented her professional evolution.
