Udupi: An elderly man from Belman near Karkala has allegedly been cheated of over Rs 12 lakh by fraudsters who promised to cure his ailing wife through ayurvedic treatment. A 68-year-old resident of Belman village filed a complaint alleging that he was duped by a group of individuals who assured him of curing his wife's serious health conditions.
The complainant, who previously worked abroad, has been taking care of his wife, as she suffers from cancer and is paralysed. On March 23, he took her to a hospital in Manipal for physiotherapy. During this visit in Udupi, he reportedly met a man named Siddharth who claimed that his mother also suffered from a similar illness and was cured through ayurvedic treatment. He then introduced the complainant to another individual identified as Madhav over the phone, who allegedly convinced the complainant that the treatment would be expensive and asked him to transfer money to an account in the name of Anil Pawar. Following this, the complainant handed over Rs 40,000 cash to Siddharth.
The accused later asked the complainant to visit an ayurvedic medicine shop in Udupi, to discuss further treatment. There, he was introduced to another person named Anil, who, along with Madhav, allegedly persuaded him that medicines costing Rs 10.8 lakh would cure his wife. Trusting them, the complainant allegedly issued multiple cheques in favour of Anil. He also collected the medicines and returned home. However, even after administering the medicines, there was no improvement in his wife's condition. When the complainant later tried to contact the accused, their phone numbers were found switched off.
