Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has declared that 28 million Australians will be 'barracking' for the Socceroos when they face Egypt in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 on Friday, July 3, in Dallas. In a video posted on X, Albanese emphasized that the team embodies the strength, diversity, and unity of modern Australia, with players of diverse backgrounds proudly representing the nation on the global stage.
Socceroos Reflect Multicultural Australia
'The Socceroos represent so much about what we love about our country. The strength, diversity and unity of modern Australia. This is a team that can trace their heritage to every corner of the world. And they love playing together for the best country on earth,' Albanese said. He urged Australians to set their alarms for the 4:00 AM kickoff and promised that tens of thousands of fans in Dallas and millions at home would be cheering them on.
Road to the Knockout Stage
Australia began their World Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over Turkey, followed by a 0-2 loss to co-hosts USA. In their final Group D fixture, they secured a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Paraguay, finishing second in the group to advance to the knockout stage. This marks Australia's third appearance in the World Cup knockout stage and their second consecutive qualification for the Round of 32.
Draw Against Paraguay Secures Progress
Against Paraguay, Australia needed only a draw to progress and dominated possession, creating better scoring opportunities. Jordan Bos, Aiden O'Neill, and Cristian Volpato combined effectively down the right flank early on. O'Neill came closest to scoring with a powerful strike that forced a fine save from Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill. Nestory Irankunda remained a constant attacking threat despite limited clear-cut chances. Paraguay improved after halftime but failed to create meaningful openings against Australia's disciplined defense. Bos nearly snatched a late winner, but his effort drifted wide. O'Neill's influential performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
Upcoming Clash Against Egypt
The Socceroos will face Egypt at Dallas Stadium on Friday. Prime Minister Albanese's rallying call underscores the nation's support for a team that represents Australia's multicultural fabric. With a place in the Round of 16 at stake, the Socceroos will look to build on their resilient defensive display and create more attacking opportunities against Egypt.
