A 26-year-old canter driver was killed on Mysuru Road in Bengaluru after a component of his vehicle detached due to the impact of crossing a hump. The incident occurred on June 25, 2026, around 10:30 pm near the Kengeri area.
Details of the Accident
According to the Kengeri Traffic Police, the driver, identified as Ravi Kumar, was transporting construction materials from Kengeri to Mysuru. As he approached a speed hump on the busy Mysuru Road, a critical component of the canter's undercarriage came loose, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle swerved and overturned, trapping the driver inside.
Passersby alerted the police and emergency services. Firefighters and rescue personnel arrived at the scene and extricated Ravi Kumar from the wreckage. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival due to severe head and chest injuries.
Investigation and Cause
Preliminary investigations suggest that the canter might have been poorly maintained, leading to the detachment of the component. Traffic police officials stated that the vehicle was not overloaded and the driver was not under the influence of alcohol. “The component failure appears to be due to wear and tear. We are examining the vehicle's maintenance records,” a senior police officer said.
The Kengeri Traffic Police have registered a case under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code against unknown persons for negligent maintenance. The body has been sent for postmortem, and the vehicle has been seized for forensic analysis.
Impact and Safety Concerns
This accident highlights the dangers posed by poorly maintained commercial vehicles on Bengaluru’s roads. According to data from the Bengaluru Traffic Police, there were over 1,200 fatal accidents in the city in 2025, with commercial vehicles involved in nearly 30% of them. Speed humps on major roads are often cited as contributing factors when vehicles are not in proper condition.
Local residents have demanded better enforcement of vehicle fitness checks and smoother road infrastructure. “Such incidents are common due to rash driving and neglected vehicles. The authorities must act,” said Mohan Kumar, a resident of Kengeri.
