Netherlands crush Sweden 5-1 to seal World Cup last-32 spot

The Netherlands delivered a commanding 5-1 victory over Sweden at Houston Stadium, securing their first win of the FIFA World Cup 2026 and officially booking their place in the Round of 32. After a 2-2 draw with Japan in their Group F opener, Ronald Koeman's side responded with ruthless attacking efficiency.

Brobbey and Gakpo put Dutch in control

Brian Brobbey opened the scoring in the fifth minute, converting Cody Gakpo's low cross from close range at the far post. Denzel Dumfries then set up Brobbey's second in the 17th minute with a deflected diagonal pass that wrong-footed the Swedish defense. Gakpo added a third just two minutes into the second half, volleying home another Dumfries cross. He then produced the goal of the match in the 54th minute, cutting inside from the left and unleashing a powerful low strike into the near corner.

Sweden fight back but Verbruggen stands firm

Sweden pulled one back in the 59th minute through Anthony Elanga, who slotted home after a swift counterattack led by Alexander Isak. Despite creating 20 shots to the Netherlands' 12 and forcing seven saves from goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, Sweden could not find a way back. Verbruggen made key stops against Viktor Gyökeres and Isak, preserving the Dutch lead. Substitute Crysencio Summerville sealed the win in the 89th minute with a curling strike into the top corner.

Group F picture changes

The result leaves the Netherlands top of Group F with four points and a +4 goal difference, while Sweden remain second on three points. Sweden's goal difference advantage from their opening 5-1 win over Tunisia was erased. According to Koeman, the performance showed the team's resilience after the Japan draw. Sweden manager Graham Potter acknowledged his side's wastefulness, stating, “We created enough chances but couldn't convert.”
