Kolkata Aims for 5 Lakh Participants on Yoga Day

Kolkata: West Bengal is preparing for an unprecedented celebration of the 12th International Day of Yoga on June 21, with organizers aiming for participation of over 5 lakh citizens in Kolkata alone. The central event, to be held at the iconic Red Road, will be led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, in what officials promise will “surpass all past global events in both scale and participation.”

Massive Turnout Expected

“The June 21 celebration in Kolkata will break all past records,” CM Adhikari announced on Monday. The grand spectacle will extend beyond Red Road, with massive crowds spilling onto critical adjoining arteries including Kingsway (Gosto Paul Avenue), Kidderpore Road, Dufferin Road, and Mayo Road, which are slated to host at least 50,000 additional practitioners.

To achieve the new milestone, the state government, jointly organizing the mega event with the Union Ministry of AYUSH, is targeting a total citywide turnout of 5 lakh. If successful, it will shatter the current Guinness World Record held by Visakhapatnam, which registered 3,02,000 simultaneous participants along Beach Road during the 11th International Day of Yoga.

Unique Regional Highlights

The celebrations will feature several distinctive regional highlights. On June 20, the eve of Yoga Day, Kolkata will host Bengal’s first large-scale river-based yoga carnival. As many as 500 launches and boats will be deployed on the Hooghly, allowing participants to perform synchronized yoga on the water. This aquatic display will be complemented by drone shows and cultural performances at Millennium Park, Babughat, Belur Math, and Dakshineswar.

Simultaneously, the forest department is shifting focus to the coast with a “Yoga by the Beach” programme in the Sundarbans. Set against the edge of the reserve forest area, most likely on Bakkhali beach, the session will include forest officials, staff, local students, and teachers. Protection camps deep within the tiger reserve and divisional forest zones will also hold localized sessions for field staff.

Public Mobilization Underway

Public mobilization is already underway. On June 14, the authorities launched a special toll-free registration number (1800-315-7008) alongside WhatsApp video links for virtual at-home sessions. Monday also marked “Yoga Sangam Day”, featuring mass practice runs at landmark sites like the Howrah Ferry Ghat and Victoria Memorial.

The momentum will accelerate on June 19 with a statewide “Daud Se Dhyan Tak” (From Running to Meditation) programme. Organized by local clubs and the sports department, the event tasks participants with a two-kilometre run followed by 15 minutes of collective meditation. CM Adhikari is scheduled to personally lead a warm-up marathon in the city.

Security and Logistics

On June 21, the main Red Road venue will transform into a highly secure zone hosting 30,000 students. The school education department is mobilizing 4,000 students from nearly 200 government, government-aided, and private institutions, alongside college and university contingents.

To ensure safety and coordination, institutional heads have been ordered to select only students from Class IX and above. Schools must register participants via a secure portal, which generates a QR-coded entry ticket sent directly to the accompanying teacher’s mobile phone.

According to the official AYUSH ministry guidelines, students and dignitaries must arrive at the venue by 5 am for preparatory warm-ups. The PM is scheduled to address the nation between 6:30 am and 7 am, before stepping down from the stage to join the crowd on the ground for a historic 45-minute mass yoga session.
