A 12-year-old girl from Kolkata has triumphed over tuberculosis meningitis after a grueling battle lasting more than a month. Aradhya Kumari Singh, a resident of Jorabagan, was discharged from Charnock Lohia Hospital on Monday and sent home to continue her recovery.
The Onset of Symptoms
According to the girl's parents, around the beginning of April, Aradhya began complaining of abdominal pain, severe headaches, and frequent episodes of unconsciousness. Concerned, her parents rushed her to the emergency unit of Charnock Lohia Hospital. Upon arrival, doctors found her condition critical and immediately intubated her.
Medical Intervention and Diagnosis
Under the care of pediatrician Dr. Uttara Bhar and neurologist Dr. Subhra Sankar Sen, along with Dr. Tanmoy Bhowmick, the medical team ventilated the 12-year-old in the emergency unit itself before transferring her to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Diagnostic tests, including an MRI, indicated tuberculous meningoencephalitis. Further procedures such as a lumbar puncture and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) study confirmed TB meningitis.
Multidisciplinary Treatment Approach
The hospital assembled a multidisciplinary medical team comprising neurologists, pulmonologists, and other relevant specialists. Treatment was initiated immediately, involving high-end antibiotics. One of the major challenges during treatment was raised intracranial pressure, a life-threatening condition where pressure inside the skull increases dangerously. Doctors successfully managed this complication through a combination of medical and surgical interventions, including the placement of an external ventricular drain.
Recovery and Prognosis
Over the following days, Aradhya's multi-organ damage began to reverse, offering hope to the medical team. Her blood parameters showed significant improvement. "We have sent her back home where she will continue to be under home care and follow-up by our medical team," said Nibedita Chatterjee, CEO of Charnock Lohia Hospital, which began operations a few months ago.
Understanding TB Meningitis
Experts explain that TB meningitis is a severe infection of the protective layers surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It occurs when the bacteria causing tuberculosis, typically originating in the lungs, travel through the bloodstream to the brain. This condition is life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention. Even with prompt treatment, mortality rates range between 20% and 50%. Survivors may suffer from brain damage or neurological disabilities.
Prior Undiagnosed Condition
The parents revealed that they had previously consulted at least three other hospitals, but Aradhya's condition continued to deteriorate as the illness remained undiagnosed. The successful outcome at Charnock Lohia Hospital highlights the importance of early diagnosis and specialized care.
