18 MBBS Students Suspended for Ragging in Gorakhpur

In a decisive move against ragging, the administration of Baba Raghav Das Medical College in Gorakhpur suspended 18 senior MBBS students for a month on Thursday. The students were found guilty of subjecting their juniors to severe mental harassment and verbal abuse. Along with the suspension, a fine of Rs 25,000 has been imposed on each of the accused students.

Immediate Action Following NMC Directive

The college administration acted swiftly after receiving a stern directive from the National Medical Commission (NMC) on Wednesday, which demanded immediate action and a follow-up report. The Principal and Dean of the medical college confirmed the action, stating that the entire committee decided to expel the students from the hostel, classrooms, and campus for one month, along with the fine. The situation is being closely monitored to ensure a safe environment for all students on campus.

Investigation and Findings

The investigation was initiated after a formal complaint was lodged via email with the NMC and the University Grants Commission (UGC). Junior students residing in the Rajendra Hostel reported being forced to stand for hours, subjected to intimidation, threats, indecent behavior, and derogatory language between the nights of May 12 and May 14. Following the NMC's directions on May 23, the college's Anti-Ragging Squad and Anti-Ragging Committee launched an immediate inquiry. Emergency meetings were held on May 26 and 27, during which the accused were summoned for interrogation.
