Residents of Ludhiana have voiced strong concerns after it was revealed that over 200 milk product samples failed quality tests in the last two years. The data, obtained through an RTI application, highlights the prevalence of adulterated and substandard dairy products in the city.
Alarming Test Results
According to the information provided by the Ludhiana district administration, a total of 1,200 samples of milk and milk products were tested between 2022 and 2024. Of these, 215 samples were found to be non-compliant with quality standards. The failed samples included milk, paneer, ghee, butter, and cheese.
Common issues detected in the samples included the presence of detergent, starch, glucose, and urea. Some samples also showed high levels of fat and SNF (solids-not-fat) discrepancies, indicating adulteration. The tests were conducted by the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) and the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation.
Public Outcry
The revelation has sparked outrage among Ludhiana residents, who are now demanding strict action against the offenders. Consumer rights activists have called for a crackdown on dairy shops and processing units that engage in adulteration. "This is a serious health hazard. The authorities must impose heavy fines and even cancel licenses of those found guilty," said a local consumer forum member.
Residents have also expressed concerns about the effectiveness of the testing and enforcement mechanisms. Many believe that the number of failed samples is just the tip of the iceberg, as many more products go untested. "We need more frequent and random checks, and the results should be made public immediately," added a resident.
Authorities Respond
The FDA officials have assured the public that they are taking the matter seriously. They stated that regular inspections are conducted, and action is taken against erring vendors. In the past two years, several notices have been issued, and some shops have been sealed. However, activists argue that the penalties are not stringent enough to deter repeat offenders.
"We have increased the number of mobile testing vans and are conducting surprise checks. But the problem is widespread, and we need cooperation from the public to report suspicious products," said a senior FDA officer.
Health Implications
Consuming adulterated milk products can lead to serious health issues, including gastrointestinal problems, kidney damage, and even cancer. Detergent in milk can cause poisoning, while urea and starch can lead to metabolic disorders. The presence of glucose in milk is particularly harmful to diabetic patients.
Health experts advise consumers to be vigilant and buy dairy products from reputed brands. They also recommend boiling milk before consumption and checking for any unusual smell or taste.
Demand for Stricter Laws
In light of the findings, there is a growing demand for stricter food safety laws and their implementation. Consumer groups are pushing for the mandatory testing of all milk products before sale and the establishment of a consumer helpline for reporting adulteration.
"The current system is not working. We need a zero-tolerance policy towards food adulteration. The guilty should be punished severely, and the public should be educated about their rights," said a food safety activist.
The Ludhiana district administration has promised to review the situation and take necessary steps to ensure the quality of milk products in the city. Meanwhile, residents are advised to remain cautious and report any suspicious products to the authorities.
