Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Announces 46 Heat Hotspots for Enhanced Public Safety

In a proactive move to combat rising temperatures, the civic health department of Ahmedabad declared 46 areas across the city as heat hotspots on Friday. These designated zones are forecasted to experience significantly higher temperatures compared to the city's average over the next three days, with seven hotspots located in the western part and the remaining 39 in the eastern regions.

Strategic Partnership with Satelio Labs for Advanced Heat Monitoring

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has forged a strategic collaboration with Satelio Labs, a space-tech startup that includes former scientists from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). This partnership aims to leverage cutting-edge technology to enhance climate resilience and public health safety. Satelio Labs is developing a high-resolution, multiband thermal intelligence satellite constellation specifically designed to identify, monitor, and predict urban heat hotspots in Ahmedabad.

By utilizing this advanced satellite technology, the AMC seeks to implement proactive measures to reduce heat stress, mitigate risks such as heatstroke, and address the challenges posed by urban heat islands. This initiative represents a significant step forward in urban planning and health preparedness, ensuring that residents are better protected during periods of extreme heat.

AI and Machine Learning Algorithms for Precise Temperature Predictions

The identification of heat hotspots is based on comprehensive land surface temperature (LST) data collected from satellites. To enhance accuracy, Satelio Labs employs sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) algorithms. These technologies analyze the satellite data to predict daily air temperatures with a spatial resolution of 30 meters by 30 meters.

The forecasts are available three days in advance, providing valuable lead time for authorities to take necessary actions. While there may be an accuracy variance of 2-3 degrees Celsius, this predictive capability allows for the timely identification of hotspot areas, enabling targeted interventions to safeguard public health.

Detailed Breakdown of Hotspot Locations Across Ahmedabad

The declared hotspots encompass various key locations throughout the city, including Solana Babylon Club Road, HB Kapadia New High School in Chandkheda, Sabarmati railway station, Ranip bus depot, Sabarmati D Cabin, and Sanathal Crossroads. A detailed zone-wise distribution reveals that the East Zone has the highest number with 17 hotspots, followed by the South Zone with 14, the North Zone with eight, the West Zone with four, the South-Western Zone with two, and the North-West Zone with one hotspot.

Notably, no hotspots have been declared for the Central Zone, indicating relatively lower temperature risks in that area. This zoning approach helps prioritize resources and public awareness campaigns in the most vulnerable parts of the city.

The AMC's initiative underscores the importance of integrating technology with urban governance to address environmental challenges. By predicting heat hotspots, the corporation aims to reduce health risks and improve the overall quality of life for Ahmedabad's residents during heatwaves.
