The Bidar district administration has issued a public advisory urging residents to take precautions against heatwave conditions expected to persist until the end of May. The warning emphasizes the need to protect vulnerable groups, including children, elderly individuals, and animals.
Heatwave Warning Intensifies
The Indian Meteorological Department has cautioned that heatwave conditions are likely to become more severe in May. Bidar Deputy Commissioner Shilpa Sharma, in a statement to the Times of India, highlighted that extreme heat poses significant health risks to the general public, workers, farmers, and livestock. She urged citizens to adhere to safety measures to mitigate the impact.
Key Safety Guidelines
The administration has advised people to avoid going outdoors between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., staying indoors or in shaded areas to prevent sunstroke. Sharma emphasized, "Drink sufficient water and fluids such as juices and buttermilk to stay hydrated."
Protecting Children and Students
Children have been instructed to refrain from outdoor activities. Schools and colleges are directed to ensure a continuous supply of drinking water and monitor students for early signs of heat stress. Special precautions are recommended for institutions with metal-roofed buildings, which can become extremely hot.
Advice for Farmers and Livestock Owners
Farmers are advised to wear hats or use umbrellas and cover their head, neck, and face with a wet cloth while working in the fields. Poultry farmers should ensure proper ventilation and adequate water supply in sheds to protect animals from heat stress.
Recognizing Heat-Related Illnesses
Individuals experiencing symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting, excessive sweating, or a rise in body temperature should seek immediate medical attention. Officials recommend administering Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) or water without delay in such cases.
