In a distressing medical case from Uttar Pradesh, a three-year-old child from Bulandshahr has been diagnosed with epithelioid sarcoma, an exceptionally rare and aggressive form of soft tissue cancer. This type of tumour accounts for less than 1% of all soft tissue sarcomas, making it a highly unusual occurrence, particularly in children of such a young age.

According to the family, the initial signs appeared approximately a year ago when a swelling developed, which gradually intensified in pain over time. The situation became critical when the child's mobility began to decline, prompting urgent medical evaluation. In September, the child was taken to Fortis Hospital in Greater Noida, where treatment has been ongoing for six months.
Diagnostic testing confirmed the presence of a tumour involving the elbow joint. Further comprehensive scans revealed an early spread of the cancer to the lungs, a development that immediately ruled out surgery as a safe first-line treatment option. This metastasis complicated the medical approach, necessitating alternative strategies.

Dr. Prabhat Ranjan, a consultant of medical oncology at the hospital, provided detailed commentary on the case. "Epithelioid sarcoma is a rare and aggressive soft tissue tumour that accounts for less than 1% of all soft tissue sarcomas," he explained. "It is particularly uncommon in children of this age. In this instance, the tumour involved the elbow joint and had already shown early spread to the lungs, making surgical intervention difficult."
Dr. Ranjan emphasised the critical role of early identification and timely chemotherapy in managing the disease. "Early identification and timely chemotherapy were pivotal in bringing the disease under control and providing meaningful symptomatic relief," he stated. The child is currently reported to be doing well, under follow-up care, and tolerating the treatment regimen effectively.

"Prolonged swelling, persistent pain, or unexplained physical changes in children should be evaluated early," he advised.
