Buxar's Rs 2.47 Crore Pediatric ICU Exposed in Dilapidated State, Prompting Immediate Action

The health department in Buxar has been compelled to take swift action following a damning report by The Times of India that revealed the shocking condition of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Buxar Sadar Hospital. This high-cost facility, constructed with an investment of Rs 2.47 crore, was found to be in a state of severe neglect and disrepair, raising serious questions about healthcare infrastructure and administration in the district.

District Administration Launches Urgent Clean-Up Drive

In response to the exposé, the district administration initiated an immediate and comprehensive clean-up operation on Saturday. Workers cleared the hospital premises of a disturbing array of debris, including empty liquor bottles, used narcotic injections, discarded medical solutions, and various other objectionable materials. A thorough sanitisation process for the entire hospital complex is currently underway to restore basic hygiene and safety standards.

Staffing Shortage Cited as Primary Reason for Non-Operation

District Magistrate Sahila addressed the core issue behind the PICU's prolonged non-operational status, stating that a critical shortage of doctors and medical staff has rendered the state-of-the-art facility useless. She has formally written to the health department, urgently requesting the deployment of necessary manpower and specialist pediatric doctors to bridge this gap.

The DM assured that once adequate staffing is secured, the advanced care unit will be made fully functional at the earliest opportunity. The primary goal is to provide life-saving, specialized medical treatment to critically ill children within Buxar district, eliminating the need for families to travel long distances for critical care.

Political and Social Reactions to the Hospital Scandal

The TOI report also triggered reactions from local political and social figures. Buxar BJP MLA Anand Mishra took cognisance of the issue and personally contacted the district administration to seek answers and push for resolution. Meanwhile, social worker Ramaji Singh expressed a mixed response.

While welcoming the belated clean-up initiative, Singh pointedly questioned the administration's delay, asking why the multi-crore ward had remained completely non-functional and neglected for nearly two years since its construction. This highlights ongoing concerns about accountability and efficient utilization of public funds in healthcare projects.

The situation at Buxar Sadar Hospital underscores a broader challenge in rural healthcare infrastructure, where expensive facilities often lie dormant due to administrative lapses and human resource deficits, failing to deliver on their promise to the community.
