Doctor Couple Drowns at Tajpur Beach, Sparking Safety Alarms

The coastal region of East Midnapore has been struck by another devastating tragedy, as a young doctor couple drowned at Tajpur beach. This incident comes shortly after the shocking drowning of actor Rahul Banerjee at nearby Talsari, intensifying concerns about beach safety in this popular tourist area.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The victims have been identified as Kuntal Chakraborty (32), a surgeon, and Shailaja Bhardwaj (30), a gynecologist. Both were residents of the Ghola area in Sodepur and were associated with a private hospital in Kolkata. The couple had been married for approximately two years.

According to police reports, locals discovered two bodies floating near the Biswa Bangla stretch of Tajpur beach on Wednesday night. Authorities from the Mandarmani Coastal Police Station were immediately alerted and recovered the bodies, which were then transported to Balisai Hospital where they were declared brought dead.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Tragedy

Preliminary investigations reveal that the couple traveled to Tajpur by car on Wednesday morning. After reaching the beach, they entered the water despite high-tide conditions and strong currents. Witness accounts suggest that Shailaja began struggling in the powerful tide, prompting Kuntal to attempt a rescue. Tragically, both were swept away by the forceful waves.

"They left for Tajpur on Wednesday morning. After reaching the beach, they entered the sea. Due to the strong tide, Shailaja began to drown. Kuntal drowned while trying to save his wife," explained Rupsa Saha, a relative of the deceased couple.

Community Reaction and Aftermath

The news has sent shockwaves through their community and professional circles. Neighbors described the couple as highly respected medical professionals known for their kindness and dedication.

"We are deeply saddened to hear of their death. They were known as kind people and excellent doctors. We are unable to come to terms with such a tragic loss," said Krishna Dutta, a neighbor of the couple.

Following the tragic news, Kuntal's father and other relatives traveled to Tajpur on Thursday morning to handle the necessary formalities and arrangements.

Growing Safety Concerns Along the Coast

This incident marks the second drowning tragedy in the region within a short period, following actor Rahul Banerjee's death at Talsari. Additionally, on the same Wednesday, two tourists narrowly escaped drowning at New Digha after being swept away by strong waves, saved only by alert lifeguards.

These consecutive incidents have amplified demands for:

  • Enhanced safety monitoring along the Digha-Tajpur coastal stretch
  • Improved warning systems for dangerous tide conditions
  • Increased lifeguard presence and emergency response capabilities
  • Better public awareness about beach safety protocols

Local authorities have confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the couple's death and to develop comprehensive safety measures for the region's beaches.
