Health authorities in Maharashtra have initiated a formal investigation into the tragic death of a 60-year-old farmer in Nilanga taluka of Latur district. The incident, which occurred earlier this week, is suspected to be linked to extreme heat exposure, raising concerns about the impact of soaring temperatures on agricultural workers.

The deceased has been identified as Laxman Bhandare, a resident of Aurad Shahajani village. According to official reports, Bhandare collapsed on Monday evening after spending the entire day laboring on his farm under harsh weather conditions. He was immediately taken to a local healthcare facility, where he received first aid before being referred to a hospital in Nilanga. Tragically, he passed away during the transfer process.
Saqueb Osmani, the Latur district disaster management officer, provided preliminary insights based on accounts from the attending doctor and the farmer's family. He indicated that the likely cause of death was cardiac failure induced by severe dehydration, potentially exacerbated by prolonged exposure to high temperatures. This has prompted a deeper look into whether heat stroke was the primary factor.

District health officer Dr. Balaji Shinde confirmed that taluka-level health authorities have been directed to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the death. Dr. Shinde explained that the inquiry team attempted to visit the bereaved family on Tuesday but was unable to meet them. The investigation will encompass multiple aspects, including the clinical history of the farmer, the outdoor and indoor conditions prior to his illness, medical observations at the initial point of contact, details of his physical activity before collapsing, and relevant weather data from the area.
"We will only be able to confirm if this was a heat stroke-related death after compiling and analyzing all the pertinent details," Dr. Shinde emphasized, highlighting the methodical approach being taken to ensure accuracy.

This incident comes amid a severe heatwave affecting several parts of the region, with temperatures in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division and surrounding areas consistently exceeding 40°C. Osmani advised that strenuous physical activities should be avoided during peak summer hours whenever possible. For farmers and other workers who cannot skip their duties, he recommended practical steps such as covering the head and ears with white cotton cloth to minimize heat exposure.
