The mishap took place in a shed where firecrackers were being prepared on behalf of a temple devaswom in anticipation of the upcoming Thrissur Pooram festival, a major cultural and religious celebration in the region. According to local residents, the initial explosion occurred around 3:30 pm, with intermittent blasts continuing afterward, which significantly hampered rescue operations and increased the danger for first responders.

In the wake of the disaster, Kerala Health Minister Veena George swiftly directed officials to ensure specialized treatment for all injured victims.
