FSSAI Seeks Blinkit's Reply After Curd Sickness Complaint

Curd, also known as dahi, is a staple comfort food during Indian summers. This versatile dairy product, rich in probiotics, protein, and calcium, aids digestion and adds a refreshing tang to meals. From breakfast cereals to lunchtime kadhi and evening chaat, curd is a beloved ingredient in many households. However, rising demand during summer often leads to malpractices by market players, resulting in substandard curd circulating in the market.

FSSAI Takes Action Against Blinkit

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recently sought an explanation from quick commerce firm Blinkit after a consumer allegedly fell sick from consuming curd ordered via the platform. According to a PTI report, the complainant required medical help and attached a prescription to the complaint. FSSAI sent a letter on May 29 to Blinkit's CEO and operations head, citing multiple complaints about unhygienic, spoiled, or damaged food supplied through the platform.

Legal Requirements for E-Commerce Food Operators

Under the FSS Act, 2006, e-commerce food business operators must comply with Sections 26 and 27, which hold them responsible for the safety of food manufactured, stored, or distributed. Earlier this month, FSSAI also sought an explanation from Blinkit regarding poor-quality eggs, taking suo-moto cognisance of social media complaints.

How to Check Curd Quality

Before consuming store-bought curd, inspect it carefully:

  • Appearance: Good curd is creamy white or slightly off-white with a small amount of clear whey. Avoid curd with pink, green, or orange spots or visible mold.
  • Smell: Fresh curd has a mild sour aroma. Discard if it smells rancid, rotten, or unpleasant.
  • Texture: Quality curd is thick, creamy, and evenly set. Reject slimy, stringy curd or one with excessive whey separation.

How to Make Curd at Home

Homemade curd is easy to prepare and ensures freshness:

Ingredients

  • 1 litre milk
  • 1-2 tsp fresh curd with live cultures (starter)

Method

  1. Boil the milk and simmer for a few minutes to improve texture and eliminate microbes.
  2. Allow milk to cool until warm (not hot).
  3. In a clean, dry bowl, dissolve the starter in a little warm milk, then stir into the rest of the milk.
  4. Cover and keep in a warm place for 4-8 hours until set.
  5. Refrigerate and enjoy fresh, homemade curd.

By following these tips, you can enjoy safe, high-quality curd while avoiding potential health risks from substandard products.
