Kalaburagi: In response to the rising temperatures across the district, a 20-bed heat stroke ward has been inaugurated at the Gulbarga Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) Hospital. The highest temperature of 45.5 degrees Celsius was recorded on Sunday at Ainapur village in Chincholi taluk, Kalaburagi district.
Emergency Facilities and Public Awareness
The newly established ward is equipped with all necessary facilities to provide emergency treatment for heat stroke cases. The district administration is actively sensitizing the public, including elderly individuals, farmers, children, and women, to remain indoors or under shade between 11 am and 4 pm daily to prevent heat strokes.
Medical Superintendent's Statement
Speaking to TOI, Dr. C.R. Shivakumar, Medical Superintendent at GIMS Hospital, Kalaburagi, said: "We have set up a special heat stroke management ward at GIMS. Previously, heat stroke patients were treated in regular wards. However, with the daily increase in cases, we decided to open a dedicated ward. Now, a 20-bed special heat stroke management ward is operational. Currently, 12 patients are admitted, and we see a regular turnover of patients being discharged and new ones admitted."
Treatment and Staff Deployment
The ward is fully stocked with all necessary medicines for heat stroke treatment. Specialized general physicians, along with a dedicated nursing team, have been deployed to manage the ward. This model is being replicated at all taluk and primary health centers in the district.
Preventive Measures and Public Alerts
To prevent heat strokes, the public is being informed and alerted daily through media and social media platforms. Authorities have instructed residents to stay safe from the scorching sun between 11 am and 4 pm and to keep themselves hydrated by drinking plenty of water, juices, and buttermilk. These measures are crucial to avoid heat-related illnesses.
