A 45-year-old labourer died from heatstroke at the grain market in Nuh district on Tuesday, marking the first confirmed heatwave fatality in Haryana this season. The victim, identified as Ramesh, a resident of a nearby village, collapsed while loading grain trucks under the scorching sun. He was rushed to the civil hospital but declared dead on arrival.
Rising Temperatures and Health Risks
The incident occurred as temperatures in the region crossed 45 degrees Celsius, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for several districts. Heatwave conditions have been persisting for over a week, with no relief expected in the coming days. Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors during peak hours and stay hydrated.
Government Response
The Haryana government has announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the family of the deceased. District administrations have been directed to set up cooling centers and ensure availability of drinking water at public places. Health departments are on high alert to handle heat-related emergencies.
This tragedy underscores the severe impact of extreme heat on outdoor workers, who are often the most vulnerable. Labour unions have called for stricter enforcement of heat safety norms, including mandatory breaks and access to shaded areas.
