Heatwave Triggers Surge in Dog Bite Cases in Palamu

Daltonganj: Heatwave-like conditions are causing a significant rise in dog bite incidents in Palamu district, with 186 cases reported this month up to May 22, according to Civil Surgeon Dr Anil Kumar Srivastava. The district has recorded a total of 1,573 dog bite cases since January.

Reasons Behind the Spike

Dr Srivastava attributed the increase to extreme warm weather and exhaustion affecting dogs. "The heat is making dogs more irritable and prone to biting," he explained. Residents have voiced concerns about frequent dog attacks. Mannu, a resident of Nawa Toli, described a slum area where a pack of at least six stray dogs roams, often chasing bikers and scooterists without provocation.

Medical Guidance for Dog Bites

Doctors emphasize that even minor scratches from dog bites require immediate medical attention. "A scratch or dog bite necessitates anti-rabies vaccination without fail," Srivastava stressed. He advised that wounds should never be stitched and must be washed with running water for a minimum of 20 minutes. "Anti-rabies vaccine cannot be missed at any cost," he added.
