IMD Issues Heat and Humidity Warning for 12 Kerala Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant heat and humidity warning for twelve districts in Kerala, forecasting temperatures to rise 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal levels until Tuesday. This alert comes as the region braces for potentially dangerous weather conditions, with authorities urging residents to take necessary precautions.

Yellow Alert for Maximum Temperatures Across Multiple Districts

A yellow alert for maximum temperatures has been specifically issued for Palakkad district, where mercury levels are expected to soar to around 38°C. Additionally, several other districts are under close watch, with Kollam, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Kasaragod anticipated to experience temperatures of approximately 37°C.

On Monday and Tuesday, day temperatures in Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Kannur are projected to hover around 36°C. This widespread heatwave underscores the severity of the current meteorological situation in the state.

High UV Index Recorded in Various Locations

Several areas have reported alarmingly high ultraviolet (UV) index readings, adding to the health risks. Thrithala recorded a UV index of 9, while other locations such as Kottarakkara, Konni, Chengannur, Chengannassery, Munnar, Ollur, and Ponnani registered a UV index of 8. These elevated levels highlight the intense solar radiation, which can lead to skin damage and other health issues if proper care is not taken.

KSDMA Issues Heat Warning and Safety Guidelines

In response to the IMD's alert, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued a comprehensive heat warning. The authority strongly advises people to remain indoors and avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours from 10 am to 3 pm. This precaution is crucial to prevent heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke.

KSDMA has also provided detailed directions and first aid measures, particularly focusing on children who may be affected by heatstroke. Key recommendations include:

  • If a child is unconscious, do not administer any food or drink and immediately call for emergency support.
  • For conscious children, bring them indoors and loosen their clothing to facilitate cooling.
  • Have the child lie down with their feet slightly elevated and sponge them with cool water to reduce body temperature.
  • Offer frequent sips of cold water to maintain hydration.
  • If vomiting occurs, turn the child to their side to prevent choking hazards.
  • Use a fan to increase airflow and aid in the cooling process.

Recent Temperature Data Highlights Rising Trends

Data recorded in the last 24 hours until Sunday morning reveals that maximum temperatures were above normal in Kottayam district, indicating an ongoing trend of increasing heat. Palakkad recorded the highest maximum temperature of 38°C, while Kannur airport reported the lowest minimum temperature of 23.2°C. This disparity underscores the fluctuating yet overall warming conditions across the region.

As the heatwave persists, residents are encouraged to stay informed through official updates from IMD and KSDMA, and to adhere strictly to the safety guidelines to mitigate health risks during this period of elevated temperatures.
