In Mangaluru, a concerning trend has emerged as neurological diseases, including multiple sclerosis, are being reported with greater frequency across India. Notably, cases are rising even among younger populations, signaling an urgent need for significant changes in how these conditions are identified and managed. This insight was shared by Dr. Asha Kishore, director of the Parkinson's and Movement Disorders Centre at Aster Cluster in Kerala, during a recent medical workshop.
Workshop Highlights Critical Issues in Neuroimmunology
Dr. Asha Kishore spoke after inaugurating the 'International Clinical Neuroimmunology Workshop,' organized by the Advanced Neuro Sciences Research Centre at Nitte, a deemed university, on Saturday. She emphasized that neurological disorders impact individuals of all age groups, with research actively exploring multiple contributing factors such as genetic causes. Disease-modifying therapies remain a central focus, with ongoing studies aimed at improving patient outcomes and slowing disease progression.
Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment
According to Dr. Kishore, diagnosis of neurological conditions is increasingly supported by advanced imaging technologies and other innovative tools, complementing traditional clinical examinations. Treatment options have expanded beyond steroid therapy, with newer methods now available. However, she noted that many neuroimmunological conditions require long-term treatment and sustained monitoring, and managing side effects during prolonged therapy continues to pose a major challenge for healthcare providers.

Dr. Kishore highlighted the rapid advancements in neurology research, pointing out that translational research is playing a crucial role in converting laboratory findings into practical clinical care. She stated that recent years have brought significant changes in both diagnosis and treatment, urging doctors, researchers, and students to prepare for further advances in the field. This call to action underscores the dynamic nature of neurological healthcare and the importance of staying updated with the latest developments.
Workshop Exceeds Expectations with High Participation
Prof. MS Moodithaya, vice chancellor of Nitte, presided over the event, adding academic weight to the discussions. Dr. Lekha Pandit, director of the Advanced Neuro Sciences Research Centre, reported that the workshop exceeded expectations, with more than 175 registrations against an initial estimate of 50 to 75 participants. The event featured expert lectures and in-depth discussions on neuroimmunology research, diagnostics, and treatment methods, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing among professionals.
