ISOPARB Conference: Timely Delivery, Golden Hour Key for Newborns

ISOPARB National Conference Highlights Critical Perinatal Care Strategies

The 41st national conference of the Indian Society of Perinatology and Reproductive Biology (ISOPARB) commenced on Saturday in Patna, bringing together leading medical specialists to discuss advancements in prenatal and neonatal care. Under the leadership of chairperson Dr Usha Sharma and secretary Dr Pragya Mishra Choudhary, the event focused on key themes such as timely decision-making during pregnancy and immediate post-birth protocols.

Timely Delivery Decisions in Complex Pregnancies

During a pivotal session, Dr Meena Samant addressed the common obstetrical dilemma of "to deliver or to wait" in complicated pregnancies. She explained that this decision requires a meticulous assessment of both maternal health and fetal wellbeing, balancing risks to ensure optimal outcomes. Dr Samant emphasized that delaying or proceeding with delivery must be based on clinical evidence and careful monitoring to prevent long-term complications for the newborn.

The Golden Hour: Defining a Newborn's Future

Dr Lalan Bhatia highlighted the crucial "golden hour" immediately after birth, stating, "The first hour defines the future of the newborn." He outlined structured protocols that healthcare providers must follow during this period, including stabilization techniques and early interventions, to enhance survival rates and reduce the risk of developmental issues. This emphasis on immediate care underscores the conference's focus on evidence-based practices in neonatal medicine.

Inauguration and Keynote Insights

The scientific programme and exhibition were formally inaugurated by Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo, Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. Guest of honour Dr Purna Chandra Mahapatra delivered a keynote lecture titled 'Human Reproduction: Doctor versus Destiny,' where he discussed case studies where medical outcomes sometimes defy expectations. Dr Mahapatra remarked, "Reproduction is a combination of doctor and destiny," stressing the importance of patience and perseverance in clinical practice.

Awards and Publications

The conference featured the release of several publications, including the souvenir by Dr Mahapatra, the newsletter by Dr Pandey and Dr Konar, and the ISOPARB journal by editor-in-chief Dr Sukumar Barik. Dr Manju Geeta Mishra was honored with the lifetime achievement award for her significant contributions to obstetrics and maternal health, recognizing decades of dedication to improving healthcare standards.

Continuing Sessions and Future Directions

The conference will continue on Sunday with sessions covering topics such as infertility, maternal-foetal medicine, and advanced neonatal care. These discussions aim to foster collaboration among experts and drive innovations in reproductive health, ensuring that the insights shared translate into better patient outcomes across India.
