Kanpur Nursing Home Sealed After Newborn Dies in NICU Fire, Doctor Booked

Health authorities in Kanpur have taken stringent action against a private nursing home in the Bithoor area following the tragic death of a newborn in a fire at its neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) on Sunday evening. The incident has led to the cancellation of the facility's registration, suspension of all medical services, and the sealing of the NICU.

Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the doctor operating the nursing home for alleged criminal negligence, though no arrests have been made yet. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Kanpur West) SM Qasim Abidi confirmed the investigation is ongoing, stating, "We are probing the incident and have filed an FIR. No arrests have been made so far."

Unlicensed NICU Operation Exposed

A preliminary inquiry by health officials revealed that the nursing home lacked the necessary permission to operate a NICU. Additional Chief Medical Officer (Kanpur) Ramit Rastogi explained, "In our inquiry, we found that the nursing home had not been granted permission to operate a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Instead, the nursing home management had placed three baby warmers in a single room and displayed a board outside declaring it as NICU."

Rastogi emphasized that while hospitals conducting deliveries are required to have a newborn care corner with warmers for immediate infant care, this does not qualify as a full-fledged NICU, which requires separate authorization. Consequently, all medical services at the facility have been ordered to shut down.

Tragic Incident Details

The fire occurred on Sunday evening after Arun Nishad brought his wife Shalu to the nursing home due to labour pains. Shalu delivered a baby girl who was admitted to the NICU. According to the family, the infant was placed on a bed under a warmer machine that caught fire, resulting in severe burn injuries and immediate death.

The family also alleged that nursing home staff attempted to suppress information about the fire, only disclosing it after persistent questioning. Health authorities have now questioned the management for setting up the NICU and installing warmers without permission, demanding a reply within three days.

Regulatory Crackdown and Ongoing Probe

This incident has prompted a broader regulatory crackdown, with officials stressing the importance of compliance with healthcare standards. The sealing of the NICU and suspension of services aim to prevent similar tragedies, as investigations continue into the exact cause of the fire and the extent of negligence.

The case highlights critical issues in neonatal care facilities in Uttar Pradesh, raising concerns about oversight and enforcement in private healthcare settings. Authorities are urging stricter adherence to licensing protocols to ensure patient safety.
