A local court in Koderma on Tuesday sentenced five individuals to prison after convicting them in a case involving the possession and sale of brown sugar under Section 20(b) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Sentencing Details
The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge-III, Rakesh Chandra, sentenced Shivam Singh (25) and Satyanand Singh (24) to two years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 each. In default of payment, they will have to serve an additional month in jail.
The three other convicts — Arman Warsi (28), Sonu Kumar (29), and Suraj Kumar (25) — were sentenced to six months of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 10,000 each. Failure to pay will result in an additional 15 days in jail.
Case Background
On July 29, 2023, Sub-Inspector Sumit Saw of Tilaiya police station received intelligence that narcotics were being consumed and sold in an under-construction building near Smart Bazaar. A police team raided the location and apprehended Shivam, Sonu, and Suraj. Authorities seized 10 packets of brown sugar, five lighters, and two smoking pipes from the scene. Subsequently, Arman and Satyanand were arrested based on statements provided by the arrested individuals.
