Kolkata Grapples with Widespread Viral Infections Causing Persistent Symptoms

Thousands of residents across Kolkata have been affected by a recent wave of viral illnesses, characterized by fever, sore throat, and notably, a persistent cough that often leads to a choked or hoarse voice. Medical experts attribute this surge to the current weather conditions, with fluctuating temperatures creating an ideal environment for viruses to thrive.

Multiple Viruses Identified as Culprits

Doctors report that adenovirus, rhinovirus, metapneumovirus, and enterovirus are actively circulating in the city. These pathogens primarily target the upper respiratory tract, resulting in severe coughing fits and inflammation of the airways. This inflammation is a key factor behind the choked voice experienced by many patients, according to healthcare professionals.

Hospital Reports Confirm Spike in Cases

Outpatient departments (OPDs) at various hospitals have witnessed a significant increase in patients complaining of lingering coughs. Manipal Hospitals noted a rise in such cases, with infectious diseases physician Sayan Chakrabarty stating, "This outbreak is likely driven by adenovirus, affecting both children and adults. In adults, it triggers respiratory airway inflammation, leading to a dry, persistent cough."

At Peerless Hospital, chief microbiologist Bhaskar Narayan Chaudhury observed that while pneumonia cases have declined with rising temperatures, the fluctuations have spurred a surge in adenovirus, metapneumovirus, and rhinovirus infections. "Symptoms are mild but stubborn, with many suffering from a dry cough lasting nearly a month. Treatment focuses on alleviating symptoms," Chaudhury explained.

Post-Viral Symptoms and Lung Impact

Charnock Hospital reported that six out of ten OPD patients exhibited a persistent cough following a fever episode. Pulmonology head Soumya Sengupta described this as a 'post-viral' symptom, resulting from minor lung damage due to viral attacks. "The virus damages the lung's epithelial layer, which protects against infections. With wide day-night temperature differences, multiple viruses have been unleashed," Sengupta noted.

Medical Advice for Managing Symptoms

Internal medicine consultant Arindam Biswas emphasized that viral infections can cause an obstinate 'viral cough'. "If the cough persists for over two weeks, anti-allergic medications may be necessary," Biswas advised. Meanwhile, Manipal Broadway Hospital has seen a fresh influx of patients with abrupt hoarseness or voice loss, accompanied by cough, body aches, and low-grade fever in the past two weeks.

Senior consultant physician Sima Datta Roy from Manipal Broadway recommended, "Avoid sudden exposure to temperature changes to reduce risk." She added that treatment remains symptomatic, focusing on relief rather than cure.

This viral surge underscores the need for public awareness and preventive measures, especially during periods of climatic instability in Kolkata.
