Kozhikode Toddler Dies of Shigella Infection

Kozhikode: A four-and-a-half-year-old girl, who was undergoing treatment at the Kozhikode Medical College after being infected with the Shigella bacteria, passed away on Saturday morning. The child had been admitted to the hospital for approximately five days prior to her death.

Details of the Illness

The young patient initially sought treatment at a primary health centre after experiencing symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting. When her condition did not show signs of improvement, she was referred to the Government Hospital for Children and Women in Kozhikode. Medical professionals there identified symptoms consistent with a Shigella infection, leading to her transfer to the medical college hospital for specialised care.

Final Rites

Following the confirmation of her death, the body was cremated at the Westhill Crematorium in Kozhikode. The incident has raised concerns about the spread of Shigella infections in the region.
