Maharashtra Drowning Tragedy: Four Lives Lost in Four Days, Swimming Banned
In a tragic series of events, two people died in separate drowning incidents on Sunday in Maharashtra's Kolhapur and Satara districts. This brings the total number of drowning fatalities to four over the past four days, prompting local authorities to take immediate action to prevent further loss of life.
Administration Issues Strict Swimming Ban
Alarmed by the rising number of drowning cases, the Radhanagari tehsil administration has issued orders prohibiting swimming in the Dudhganga River, Bhogavati River, and the backwaters of the Kalammawadi dam. Strict action will be taken against anyone found violating these safety norms, as officials aim to curb the dangerous trend that has claimed multiple lives in a short period.
Sunday's Fatal Incidents: Details Emerge
The first incident occurred in Kolhapur district, where Santosh Chougule (27), a tractor driver and resident of Khandal village in Gadhinglaj tehsil, drowned in the Hiranyakeshi River. According to information from the Gadhinglaj police, Chougule had gone for a swim but tragically misjudged the water's depth. Onlookers managed to pull him out, but he was already unconscious. He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The incident has been officially registered with the Gadhinglaj police station based on a complaint filed by his grieving brother.
In a separate tragedy in Satara district, Sanket Jadhav (24), a tourist from Ahilyanagar, drowned in the Koyna backwater in Mahabaleshwar at 7:30 AM on Sunday. Inspector Bapusaheb Sandbhor provided details, stating that Jadhav had visited Mahabaleshwar with his friend Shyam Chandrawat. "Both friends entered the Koyna backwaters for a swim at Solshi. After swimming about 50 to 60 feet, Sanket became exhausted and started drowning," Sandbhor explained. Locals assisted in pulling him out and attempted CPR, but there was no movement in his body. An ambulance was called, and he was taken to the Rural Hospital in Mahabaleshwar, where medical officers declared him dead before treatment could begin.
Previous Drowning Deaths Highlight Ongoing Risk
These Sunday incidents follow two earlier drowning deaths that occurred on Friday in Kolhapur district. One victim drowned in the Dudhganga River at Kalammawadi in Radhanagari tehsil, while another lost their life in the Warna River in Panhala tehsil. The consecutive fatalities over just four days underscore the urgent need for enhanced water safety measures and public awareness in the region.
Authorities are urging residents and tourists to exercise extreme caution around water bodies, especially during the monsoon season when river currents can be unpredictable and dangerous. The swimming ban is a critical step to prevent further tragedies, but officials emphasize that individual responsibility and adherence to safety guidelines are equally important to ensure community well-being.
