A 47-year-old man who succumbed to injuries sustained in a road traffic accident has given a new lease of life to five individuals through organ donation. The incident occurred in Madurai district, where the deceased, identified as Sivakumar, was traveling on a two-wheeler when a four-wheeler collided with his vehicle near Rajakudi at approximately 7:30 PM on May 26.
Medical Treatment and Declaration
Sivakumar suffered a severe head injury and was immediately rushed to the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai. He received intensive care from the neurosurgery and ICU teams. Despite all efforts and active management, he was declared brain dead on May 28.
Family's Consent and Organ Harvesting
In a noble gesture, the deceased's wife, Rajeswari, gave her consent for the donation of her husband's organs. The organ harvesting procedure was carried out at the trauma care centre of GRH.
Distribution of Organs
The donated organs were allocated to various hospitals across Tamil Nadu. The liver was sent to Dr. Sundaram Hospital in Trichy. One kidney was transported to Government Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Trichy, while the other kidney was sent to Government Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital in Tirunelveli. Additionally, both corneas and the skin were donated to Madurai GRH. In total, five individuals benefited from this generous act of organ donation.
Postmortem and Final Rites
The postmortem examination was conducted at GRH, and the body was handed over to the family members through the police department. The administration of GRH paid homage to the departed soul, and the Madurai district administration accorded state honors to the deceased.
This act of kindness highlights the importance of organ donation and the impact it can have on saving lives. The family's decision to donate organs in their time of grief is commendable and serves as an inspiration to others.
