Marathwada Lightning Fatalities Climb to Four Amid Severe Weather

The death toll from lightning strikes in Maharashtra's Marathwada region has increased to four this week, as unseasonal rain and hailstorms continue to batter the area during evening and night hours. Beed district reported two additional incidents, adding to the grim statistics.

Agricultural and Livestock Losses Mount

According to initial official assessment data, this fresh spell of extreme weather has resulted in significant devastation beyond human casualties. Since March 30, the storms have killed 77 cattle and ravaged crops on over 5,345 hectares of farmland.

The data indicates that a minimum of approximately 8,780 farmers from 209 villages across the region have been impacted by these adverse conditions, threatening their livelihoods and food security.

Details of the Recent Fatalities

The two youths who lost their lives in lightning strikes on March 30 have been identified as Govind Lahane (21) and Aditya Bedre (20). Official details regarding the two deaths from Beed district are still awaited from authorities, highlighting the ongoing nature of the crisis.

Recurring Extreme Weather Patterns

This is not the first time Marathwada has faced such destructive weather events. In the third week of March, similar extreme conditions claimed two lives and killed 40 cattle due to lightning strikes, while inflicting agricultural damage on approximately 11,000 hectares.

The pattern of unseasonal storms suggests a concerning trend of climate variability affecting the region's agricultural calendar and safety.

Official Response and Assessment

Rita Metrewar, the additional commissioner (revenue) for Marathwada, stated that a comprehensive report detailing agricultural and other losses from the region will be submitted to the state government once spot panchnamas (on-site assessments) are completed. This formal documentation is crucial for determining relief measures and compensation for affected farmers.

Continuing Weather Threats

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, the region faces ongoing weather challenges. Thunderstorms with hail are likely in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and some other parts of Marathwada on Friday, followed by chances of thunderstorms and moderate rain for the subsequent 24-hour period.

The Met office has indicated that no clear skies are expected before at least April 5, suggesting that residents and farmers must remain vigilant against further weather-related hazards.

The combination of human fatalities, livestock losses, and extensive crop damage underscores the severe impact of unseasonal weather patterns on Marathwada's agricultural community, calling for immediate attention and support measures.
