Mizoram Hosts Major Oncology Conference as State Grapples with Highest Cancer Rates in India

The 21st annual conference of the Association of Oncologists of Northeast India (AONEI) commenced on Friday night at the Aijal Club in Aizawl, drawing significant attention to the region's pressing cancer challenges. The event, organized by the Mizoram State Cancer Institute (MSCI), was formally inaugurated by State Health Minister Lalrinpuii, who highlighted the critical need for enhanced cancer care and research in the area.

Alarming Cancer Statistics in Mizoram and the Northeast

In her inaugural address, Minister Lalrinpuii underscored a sobering reality: Mizoram currently holds the dubious distinction of having the highest incidence of cancer across the entire nation. She referenced multiple reports from the National Cancer Registry Programme, which confirm that the northeastern region, including Mizoram, is disproportionately affected by various forms of cancer.

Specific types of cancer prevalent in the region include esophageal cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, and cervical cancer. The minister expressed a hopeful outlook that the conference would yield positive outcomes, potentially transforming the cancer landscape not only in Mizoram but throughout Northeast India.

Government Initiatives and International Collaboration

Detailing the state government's proactive measures to combat the high cancer rates, Lalrinpuii announced a landmark project: the establishment of the Mizoram State Super-Specialty Cancer & Research Centre in the Zemabawk neighborhood of Aizawl. This ambitious initiative is being realized with substantial financial support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, amounting to Rs 700 crore.

The new center is set to offer advanced medical services, including bone marrow transplants and a range of nuclear medicine facilities. Key diagnostic tools such as PET (Positron Emission Tomography) scans and various cancer tests will be available, significantly enhancing the region's diagnostic and treatment capabilities.

Gathering of National Healthcare Experts

The three-day conference has attracted over 100 healthcare professionals from across India, fostering a collaborative environment for knowledge exchange and innovation. Among the distinguished participants are several renowned oncologists who will deliver presentations on the latest advancements in cancer care.

  • Dr. Pankaj Chaturvedi, Director of the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) in Mumbai.
  • Dr. Dodul Mondal, a radiation oncologist from Max Hospital in Delhi.
  • Dr. Mohammed Imaduddin, a surgical oncologist affiliated with Cion Cancer Clinics in Hyderabad.
  • Dr. Harikrishna Kovilapu, a medical oncologist from Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore.

Their contributions are expected to provide valuable insights into cutting-edge treatments and research methodologies, potentially influencing future cancer management strategies in the region.

The conference serves as a crucial platform for addressing the unique challenges faced by Mizoram and the broader Northeast, aiming to bridge gaps in cancer care through education, collaboration, and the implementation of state-of-the-art medical infrastructure.
