The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has issued a show-cause notice to the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) for its failure to control water pollution in Rankala Lake. The action follows a complaint filed by social activist Dilip Desai, prompting MPCB officials to conduct thorough inspections on May 22 and May 25.
Activist Highlights Longstanding Neglect
Dilip Desai, representing Prajasattak Samajik Sewa Sanstha, expressed concern that despite guidelines from the MPCB and the National Green Tribunal (NGT) over the past 15 years, pollution in Rankala Lake persists. He stated, “The KMC is focused on beautification of Rankala Lake to attract tourists. However, the root cause of pollution remains neglected. Priority should be given to stop the lake’s pollution permanently.”
MPCB Directives and Legal Action
Nikhil Gharat, regional officer of MPCB in Kolhapur, said, “The KMC is directed to stop the discharge of domestic effluent directly or indirectly into the lake. Also, it is directed to stop animal and cloth washing activities immediately to avoid further damage to the environment. The civic body has been given seven days to reply to the notice. If not, legal action will be initiated under provisions of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974.”
KMC Response
A KMC official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed receipt of the notice and stated, “We have received the show-cause notice and a reply will be sent accordingly. Measures are being taken to prevent water pollution in Rankala Lake.” The KMC is expected to outline its action plan to address the pollution concerns within the stipulated timeframe.
