New Plant Species Named After Music Icon Zubeen Garg Discovered in Assam's Manas National Park

In a significant botanical discovery that underscores the rich biodiversity of Assam, researchers from Gauhati University have identified a previously unknown plant species from the grasslands of Manas National Park. The scientists have honored Assamese music legend Zubeen Garg by naming the new species Osbeckia Zubeengargiana.

Scientific Documentation and Research Team

The newly identified species belongs to the Melastomataceae family and was formally documented by a research team consisting of Barnali Das and Namita Nath from Gauhati University, along with Prasobh Pulpra from NSS College in Kerala. Their findings were recently published in the respected scientific journal Phytotaxa, detailing the plant's characteristics and habitat.

The discovery resulted from extensive botanical surveys conducted between 2021 and 2025 in the grasslands of Manas National Park, located in Assam's Baksa district. These systematic surveys revealed this previously undocumented member of the region's flora.

Physical Characteristics and Flowering Pattern

According to the published study, Osbeckia Zubeengargiana is a perennial shrub that typically grows to heights between 2.5 and 3.5 meters. The plant produces attractive clusters of pink flowers that measure approximately 2.5 to 3 centimeters in length.

Researcher Namita Nath explained that while the new species shares similarities with Osbeckia Rostrata, it exhibits several distinct morphological differences that justify its classification as a separate species. The flowering period for this plant occurs from mid-September through January, adding seasonal color to the grassland ecosystem.

Taxonomic Significance and Conservation Status

This discovery expands the known diversity of the genus Osbeckia, which now includes more than 40 species distributed primarily across South and Southeast Asia. Each new addition to this genus provides valuable insights into plant evolution and regional biodiversity patterns.

Although researchers observed a substantial population of Osbeckia Zubeengargiana during their surveys, scientists have currently classified its conservation status as "Data Deficient" according to International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) criteria. This designation indicates that while the plant appears to have a healthy population in its discovered habitat, further research is needed to fully assess its conservation needs and potential threats.

Cultural Significance and Naming Honor

The decision to name the plant after Zubeen Garg represents a meaningful connection between scientific discovery and cultural heritage. Garg, an immensely popular singer, composer, and actor in Assam and across Northeast India, has become synonymous with Assamese cultural identity through his decades of musical contributions.

This botanical tribute recognizes not only Garg's artistic legacy but also creates a permanent link between Assam's cultural icons and its natural heritage. Such naming conventions help bridge scientific communities with broader public awareness and appreciation for biodiversity conservation.

The discovery of Osbeckia Zubeengargiana adds another layer to Assam's reputation as a biodiversity hotspot within India. Manas National Park, already recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Tiger Reserve, now reveals yet another botanical treasure within its protected grasslands.
