Major Congenital Heart Disease Screening Camp Held in Ranchi

The state chapter of the National Health Mission (NHM) in Jharkhand, in partnership with Amrita Hospital from Kochi, successfully conducted a two-day congenital heart disease (CHD) screening camp at Ranchi Sadar Hospital. This initiative, held on Friday and Saturday, aimed to detect and address heart defects in children across the region.

Significant Screening Results and Referral Process

During the camp, a total of 292 children underwent screening over the two days. Out of these, 105 children were diagnosed with congenital heart disease. Those identified with conditions necessitating surgical intervention will be referred to Amrita Hospital in Kochi, where they will receive completely free treatment. This referral system is part of a broader effort to ensure timely medical care for affected children.

Details from Health Officials and Patient Demographics

Dr. Vijay Kishore Rajak, the state nodal officer of the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK), provided insights into the camp's operations. He explained that the children screened were initially identified by doctors at the district level. "The children will undergo a final screening at Ranchi Sadar Hospital. Among them, those requiring surgeries will be sent to Kochi for treatment," Rajak stated. The patient distribution included 43 from Ranchi, 25 from Khunti, 20 from Godda, and 27 from Chatra, highlighting the camp's reach across multiple districts.

Memorandum of Understanding and Government Support

This screening camp is underpinned by a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Amrita Hospital and the NHM in January. The agreement focuses on detecting and treating CHD patients in Jharkhand. Under this MoU, the Jharkhand government will cover transportation, lodging, and all medical expenses for the patients, ensuring financial barriers do not hinder access to care. In February, a similar camp in Giridih district screened 150 children, with 50 diagnosed with CHD and 15 already undergoing surgeries.

Impact of Congenital Heart Disease and Surgical Benefits

Congenital heart disease affects approximately 1 in 100 babies born, with defects that can disrupt normal blood flow and range from minor issues to critical, life-threatening problems. Dr. Brijesh, a heart surgeon at Amrita Hospital, emphasized the severity of the condition, noting that around 7,000 children are born with CHD in Jharkhand each year. "Children born with severe CHD cannot live even a year. Sometimes in very rare cases they can live up to 30 years. However, once surgery is conducted, they can lead a normal life without any medication," he explained.

Dr. Brijesh also highlighted the financial aspect, stating that surgeries at private hospitals can cost up to Rs 2-2.5 lakh, but under the MoU, patients can avail these procedures for free. This initiative not only addresses health concerns but also alleviates economic burdens on families, promoting better healthcare outcomes for children across the state.
