Punjab Anti-Drug Campaign Treats 90,000 Addicts

The Punjab government's campaign against drug abuse, known as Yudh Nashean Virudh, is showing significant results, with thousands of individuals receiving treatment and rehabilitation support. Launched on March 1, 2025, the initiative combines strict action against drug traffickers with large-scale efforts focused on de-addiction, counseling, rehabilitation, and public awareness.

Over 90,000 Treated

Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh announced that between March 2025 and May 2026, more than 90,000 people affected by substance abuse were admitted to de-addiction centers and Outpatient Opioid Assisted Treatment (OOAT) facilities across the state. This milestone underscores the campaign's impact in addressing the drug crisis.

Role of Families and Teachers

Singh emphasized that parents, teachers, and local communities serve as the first line of defense. He urged them to identify early signs of substance abuse before it develops into full-fledged addiction. Warning signs may include mood swings, irritability, declining academic or professional performance, social withdrawal, secrecy, sudden financial demands, and loss of interest in hobbies or sports.

Physical symptoms such as fatigue, red eyes, disturbed sleep, poor hygiene, and unexpected weight changes can also indicate substance abuse. The minister advised parents to remain actively engaged in their children's lives and watch for behavioral changes.

Multi-Pronged Approach

The Punjab government maintains that tackling drug abuse requires a comprehensive strategy involving prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation, alongside strict enforcement against traffickers. The Yudh Nashean Virudh campaign exemplifies this approach, aiming to curb addiction through coordinated efforts.
