District Administration Enforces Strict Compliance with FSSAI Labelling Rules
The Rohtak district administration has directed all food business operators in the city to strictly adhere to the food labelling guidelines issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Deputy Commissioner Sachin Gupta issued the orders on Monday, emphasizing that accurate and transparent labelling is essential to safeguard consumer rights and ensure quality, reliability, and accountability in the food sector.
Key Labelling Requirements for Packaged Food Products
According to the directive, every packaged food product must clearly display its name for easy identification by consumers. The net weight or quantity must be prominently mentioned. The list of ingredients should be provided in descending order of quantity, enabling consumers to understand the exact contents. Additionally, the name and complete address of the manufacturer, packer, or importer must be included on the label.
Nutritional information must be presented in the prescribed format, detailing energy (calories), protein, fat, carbohydrates, sugar, and sodium per serving. The serving size and percentage contribution towards daily nutritional requirements should also be clearly indicated. Gupta stressed that this information helps consumers make informed dietary choices.
Allergen Declarations and Date Marking
Food products containing allergens—such as milk, peanuts, soy, eggs, wheat, fish, sesame, or other allergenic substances—must clearly state this on the label. The allergen declaration should be displayed in bold or prominently visible letters, as it is crucial for consumers with allergies. Furthermore, every packaged item must carry the manufacturing date, packaging date, and expiry or use-by date to help consumers assess product quality and shelf life.
Inspections and Penalties for Non-Compliance
The Food Safety Administration regularly conducts inspections and awareness campaigns. An official stated, “Any food business operator found failing to provide mandatory information on labels or violating FSSAI norms will face action under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act.” The district administration has appealed to consumers to carefully read label information before purchasing packaged food items and to use only those products that comply with prescribed safety and quality standards.
Strengthening Consumer Confidence
Proper labelling enhances consumer confidence and strengthens the food safety system, according to the administration. Food manufacturers, packers, distributors, and sellers have been instructed to ensure complete compliance with all FSSAI standards and guidelines related to food labelling. The move aims to create a transparent marketplace where consumers can trust the products they buy.
