Thane Hospital's Unauthorized IVF Center Exposed, Prompting City-Wide Crackdown
In a significant development, authorities in Thane have discovered an unauthorized in-vitro fertilization (IVF) center operating within a prominent local hospital. This revelation has led to immediate orders for comprehensive inspections of all such facilities and sonography centers across the city, as confirmed by officials on Wednesday.
Raid and Seizure Following Illegal Egg-Selling Racket
The action stems from a recent illegal human "egg-selling" racket that was busted in the Badlapur area of Thane district in Maharashtra. According to an official release, the Thane Municipal Corporation's (TMC) health department conducted a raid on March 6 at the unlicensed IVF facility. The center's approval has been cancelled, and three sonography machines at the facility have been sealed, highlighting the severity of the violations.
High-Level Meeting and Directives from the Mayor
Taking serious note of the infractions, Thane mayor Sharmila Pimpalolkar convened a high-level meeting on Tuesday. The meeting was attended by TMC Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Prasad Patil and Shiv Sena group leader Pawan Kadam. The mayor has directed the administration to immediately inspect all IVF and sonography centers within the Thane Municipal Corporation limits, as per the release. Additionally, she ordered the launch of a "special campaign against illegal sonography centers" to ensure strict compliance with medical safety norms.
Exploitation of Vulnerable Women Uncovered
During the meeting, Dr. Patil revealed disturbing details about the illegal operations. Poor women were being coerced into producing excess eggs through hormonal injections in exchange for money. These eggs were then extracted and sold for lakhs of rupees to childless couples, exposing a deeply exploitative practice. To address this, the mayor has mandated a strict monitoring mechanism to ensure accountability.
Ongoing Monitoring and Weekly Reporting
The administration has been instructed to monitor the investigation regularly and submit a report every week. The action taken by the health department must be continued without interruption, as quoted in the release from the mayor.
