Tragic Drowning Incident Claims Three Young Lives in Bihar's Saran District
In a devastating incident that highlights the ongoing challenges faced by rural families, three children from a single family drowned in the Saryu river in Bihar's Saran district on Friday. The tragedy occurred when the children, who had ventured out to collect firewood due to a prolonged LPG cylinder shortage at home, encountered a fatal accident near the riverbank.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Tragedy
The victims have been identified as Gunjan Kumar (10), son of Pappu Mahto; his sister Ragini Kumari (12); and their maternal cousin Priyanshi Kumari (13), daughter of relative Krishna Mahto. All were residents of Paigambarpur village under the Baniyapur police station jurisdiction, though the incident occurred at Matiyar village in the Manjhi police station area.
According to eyewitness accounts from family members, the tragedy began when seven children from the village, including Gunjan's elder brother Shyam Kumar, went to the diara area around 8 AM to cut wood using axes. The family had been without an LPG cylinder for several days, creating significant difficulties in cooking meals.
"While cutting wood, Gunjan felt thirsty and approached the Saryu river to drink water," explained Shyam Kumar. "Suddenly, his foot slipped and he fell into deep water. Seeing her brother drowning, his sister Ragini immediately jumped into the river to save him, but she too lost her balance and began drowning."
Failed Rescue Attempts and Recovery Efforts
The situation escalated when Priyanshi, witnessing both her cousins struggling in the water, entered the river in a desperate attempt to rescue them. Tragically, she also slipped into deep water, leading to all three children drowning despite frantic efforts from others present.
Gunjan's elder brother and another youth entered the river to attempt a rescue but were forced to retreat after nearly being swept away themselves. Hearing the children's cries for help, nearby villagers rushed to the spot and immediately began search operations along the riverbank.
"After nearly 45 minutes of intensive effort, the bodies of all three children were recovered within a radius of approximately 100 metres from the incident site," stated Manjhi Station House Officer Vinod Kumar. "The bodies were subsequently sent to Sadar Hospital in Chhapra for post-mortem examination as per standard procedure."
