Toxic fumes kill three in illegal tank cleaning at factory

A tragic incident in Ludhiana has claimed three lives after toxic fumes were inhaled during an illegal and unequipped cleaning of a chemical effluent tank at a hand tools factory. The deceased have been identified as Maan Singh, 56, his son Amit, 26, and industrial worker Shri Ram, 41. The event occurred at the Deep Tools facility on RK Road in the early hours of Monday, around 2:30 am.

Details of the Incident

According to police reports, Maan Singh entered the tank without any protective mask or safety gear. The toxic gases inside quickly incapacitated him. When his son Amit attempted a rescue by jumping into the tank, he too was overcome by the fumes. Three factory workers who were assigned to assist the pair subsequently collapsed while trying to help. Shri Ram died at the scene, while the other two workers, Rajinder and Deepak, survived and were stabilized at a local hospital.

Legal and Safety Violations

Industrial Area Assistant Commissioner of Police Inderjit Singh Boparai stated that the cleaning operation was illegal. Local regulations require that all factory effluent be handled by JBR Technologies for treatment and disposal. The factory allegedly bypassed these mandatory safety protocols and private disposal contracts to clear the waste. “Maan Singh and his son were called to clean the tank without any safety gear,” Boparai said.

Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. He criticized the factory owners for failing to report the deaths to the district administration. Officials only became aware of the fatalities after hospital staff contacted them. The Subdivisional Magistrate (East) will lead a judicial inquiry, with a report expected within three days.

Investigation and Charges

Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage to establish the sequence of events. They are working with the Punjab Pollution Control Board to identify the specific toxic gas responsible for the deaths. Authorities are also investigating why the factory bypassed its legal waste-disposal contract. No arrests have been made yet, but police have filed an FIR under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

This incident highlights the grave dangers posed by neglecting safety protocols in industrial settings. The authorities have vowed to take strict action against those responsible.
