Patna: Two complex spine surgeries were successfully performed on Tuesday at the orthopaedics department of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) by a team led by spine surgeon Dr Mahesh Prasad.
The patients, both of whom were previously bedridden with lost leg strength, underwent procedures to correct severe spinal injuries. A 13-year-old patient from Nawada received treatment for a fractured cervical spine caused by a heavy object falling on her neck, which paralysed her legs. Doctors successfully relieved the pressure on her spinal cord and expected her to return to normal life within two months.
A second patient from Patna, who suffered for years from chronic back pain and limited mobility, underwent a successful Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion (TLIF) to address severe disc compression between the L-4 and L-5 vertebrae.
Dr Saurabh, Dr Chand, Dr Rahul, Dr Nitish, Dr Saif, Dr Vivek Priyadarshi and head of the anaesthesia department, Dr Sudama Prasad, assisted Dr Prasad. He was supported by hospital leadership, including principal Dr N P Singh, superintendent Dr Rajiv Kumar Singh, and head of orthopaedics Dr Rakesh Chaudhary.
