A 50-year-old contract worker sustained serious head and spinal injuries after being hit by a descending dumbwaiter lift at the Dr Vasantrao Pawar Medical College in Adgaon on Monday around noon, the police said.
The injured woman, identified as Jyoti Ahire, a resident of Mane Nagar in Amrutdham, was admitted in serious condition to the same hospital and is currently in the intensive care unit (ICU), according to senior inspector Umesh Patil of the Adgaon police.
Following a complaint lodged by the woman's son, the police registered a case under section 125(B) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for an act endangering life or personal safety.
Details of the Incident
Dr Sudhir Bhamre, the dean of the Adgaon-based medical college, stated that the incident occurred around noon when Ahire was placing medical equipment inside a dumbwaiter lift at the hospital's operation theatre. She had put her head inside the lift duct to check the lift's position when it suddenly descended and struck her, causing her neck to get trapped and resulting in severe injuries.
Inquiry Initiated
Dr Bhamre termed the incident unfortunate and said an internal inquiry has been initiated to ascertain the circumstances leading to the accident. He confirmed that Ahire remains under intensive medical care.
Police Deployment
As news of the incident spread, a large crowd of Ahire's relatives and others gathered at the hospital, prompting the police to deploy strict bandobast to prevent any law-and-order issues.
