Bengal Gets Rs 3,000 Crore for Healthcare Revamp

West Bengal is set to receive a significant boost in healthcare infrastructure with the central government allocating Rs 3,000 crore for a comprehensive revamp of the state's health sector. The announcement was made by senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, on Thursday.

Ayushman Bharat Card Rollout from July

Adhikari further revealed that the rollout of Ayushman Bharat cards in the state will commence from July this year. The cards, which are part of the central government's flagship health insurance scheme, will provide eligible beneficiaries with cashless treatment up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year. The state government has been urged to expedite the implementation process to ensure that the benefits reach the intended population without delay.

Central Allocation for Ayushman Bharat

The Centre has also released its share of Rs 976 crore for the Ayushman Bharat scheme for the current fiscal year. This allocation is expected to cover the premium payments for the insurance coverage of the beneficiaries in the state. Adhikari emphasized that the central government remains committed to providing quality healthcare to all citizens, irrespective of their financial status.

The Rs 3,000 crore healthcare revamp package will focus on upgrading existing hospitals, setting up new primary health centers, and enhancing medical infrastructure in rural and semi-urban areas. Special attention will be given to improving maternal and child health services, as well as strengthening disease surveillance mechanisms.

Adhikari urged the state government to cooperate fully with the central agencies to ensure seamless implementation of these initiatives. He also called for transparency in the utilization of funds to maximize the impact on the ground.

The announcement comes amid ongoing discussions between the central and state governments over the implementation of Ayushman Bharat in West Bengal. The state had earlier expressed reservations about the scheme, but recent developments indicate a willingness to move forward. With the central government's substantial financial commitment, the healthcare landscape in West Bengal is poised for a major transformation.
