Shivamogga MP Announces Major Healthcare Upgrades and Community Initiatives

In a significant development for healthcare infrastructure in the region, Shivamogga MP BY Raghavendra announced on Wednesday the establishment of a state-of-the-art 30-bed neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at McGann District Hospital. This specialized facility is designed to provide critical care for premature infants and those with low birth weight, addressing a crucial need in the area.

Funding and Equipment Details for the NICU Project

The project has received a substantial boost with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman sanctioning Rs 5 crore for its implementation. Of this total, Rs 4.4 crore has been allocated specifically for advanced medical equipment, including essential items like ventilators and incubators, which are vital for neonatal care. An additional Rs 60 lakh is earmarked for infrastructure development to support the unit.

The Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) department will oversee the construction phase, which will commence following the completion of the tender process. Once operational, this NICU is expected to serve families not only from Shivamogga but also from four to five surrounding districts, significantly improving access to specialized pediatric healthcare.

Expansion Plans: Critical Care Ward and Cancer Hospital

In addition to the NICU, MP Raghavendra revealed that a Rs 60-crore critical care ward is currently under construction on the premises of McGann Hospital. This ward is being modeled on the renowned Kidwai Hospital, aiming to bring high-quality critical care services to the region.

Furthermore, plans are actively underway to establish a full-fledged cancer hospital on the same campus, also based on the Kidwai model. This initiative promises to enhance cancer treatment accessibility, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances for specialized care.

Preventive Healthcare and Community Welfare Programs

On the preventive healthcare front, Raghavendra highlighted the Union government's efforts to combat cervical cancer. He noted that HPV vaccines are being provided to girls who have completed 14 years of age and are under 15, as part of a national initiative to prevent this disease.

The MP also detailed several community-oriented projects being implemented through various organizations:

  • Braille learning devices worth Rs 23 lakh are being provided to students at Sharada School for the Blind in Shivamogga, funded by the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund of the Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd.
  • ONGC has agreed to install solar lights in 1,000 villages inhabited by Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities, promoting sustainable energy solutions.
  • Additionally, 600 sewing machines will be distributed to the Byndoor constituency, supporting skill development and economic empowerment.

These announcements underscore a comprehensive approach to healthcare and community welfare in Shivamogga, combining infrastructure development with preventive measures and social support programs.
