Mumbai's Sion Hospital Set for Major Expansion with Rs 2,500 Crore Redevelopment Project
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis officially launched the second phase of the extensive redevelopment plan for Sion Hospital in Mumbai on Friday. This ambitious initiative is designed to significantly enhance the hospital's infrastructure and service capabilities, addressing critical overcrowding issues that have long plagued the facility.
Substantial Increase in Bed Capacity and Modern Facilities
The redevelopment project aims to boost the hospital's bed capacity from the current 1,900 beds to an impressive 3,286 beds, representing a 73% increase. This expansion is part of a comprehensive Rs 2,500 crore investment scheduled for completion by 2030. The upgraded facility will feature a new main building, a dedicated cancer centre, enhanced emergency services, and a modern outpatient department (OPD).
During the inauguration, Chief Minister Fadnavis highlighted the urgent need for this expansion, noting, "At present, the hospital is severely overburdened. As they can't deny treatment to anyone, there are instances of two patients sharing one bed." This statement underscores the pressing demand for improved healthcare infrastructure in the region.
Phased Development to Minimize Disruption
Dr. Pramod Ingle, the dean of Sion Hospital, explained that the redevelopment is being executed in two carefully planned phases to ensure continuous patient care. "The redevelopment work is being done in two phases so that patient services are not impacted," he stated. The first phase, which included four buildings, has seen the completion of two structures for resident doctors and allied staff. The remaining two buildings, intended as hostels and accommodation for 1,200 students and professors, are expected to be finished within the next year.
For the second phase, old quarters for resident doctors and staff will be demolished to make way for a 14-storey multispeciality hospital and a 13-storey cancer centre. Additionally, plans include demolishing the existing OPD and emergency building to construct a new 13-storey OPD building and a 14-storey emergency building.
Comprehensive Infrastructure Upgrades
The project encompasses a wide range of new facilities aimed at transforming Sion Hospital into a state-of-the-art medical hub. Key components include:
- A 25-storey residential tower for doctors and nurses to provide on-site accommodation.
- Over 40 operation theatres to support advanced surgical procedures.
- Enhanced emergency and outpatient departments to streamline patient flow and care.
This redevelopment is poised to not only alleviate current overcrowding but also position Sion Hospital as a leading healthcare provider in Mumbai, capable of meeting future demands with improved efficiency and expanded services.
