AIIMS Delhi Introduces Free Specialized Blood Tests for Early Nerve Disorder Detection
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi has launched a groundbreaking initiative offering a new set of free blood tests designed to detect serious nerve disorders at an early stage. This development could significantly improve patient outcomes by identifying autoimmune conditions before they lead to long-term damage or permanent disability, while simultaneously saving patients substantial amounts of money on diagnostic expenses.
Three Critical Tests Now Available at No Cost
The institute has begun providing three highly specialized tests—Human Anti Neurofascin-140, 155, and 186 antibodies—that assist medical professionals in identifying autoimmune conditions where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own nerves. These disorders are frequently overlooked or diagnosed late because their symptoms—such as weakness, tingling sensations, or sudden loss of movement—often overlap with other medical conditions, making accurate diagnosis challenging without specific testing.
What makes this initiative particularly significant is the combination of improved access and eliminated cost barriers. According to the department of biochemistry at AIIMS, these specialized tests are prohibitively expensive in the private healthcare sector, with Neurofascin (140, 155, and 186) tests typically priced around Rs 26,500. At AIIMS Delhi, these crucial diagnostic tools are currently being offered completely free of charge, requiring only a small blood sample from patients.
Streamlined Process and Digital Reporting
The testing process has been designed with patient convenience in mind. Test reports will be made available online through digital platforms, significantly reducing the need for repeated hospital visits and making the entire diagnostic journey more efficient and less burdensome for patients and their families. This digital approach aligns with modern healthcare practices that prioritize accessibility and patient-centered care.
Medical Experts Emphasize Critical Importance of Early Detection
Dr. Ashok Sharma from the biochemistry department of AIIMS emphasized the critical importance of early diagnosis for autoimmune nerve conditions. "If these conditions are identified in time, appropriate treatment can halt disease progression and, in some cases, even reverse symptoms," explained Dr. Sharma. "However, delays in diagnosis can lead to irreversible nerve damage or permanent disability, making early detection through these specialized tests absolutely vital for patient outcomes."
Implementation and Patient Referral Process
AIIMS has instructed its various departments to actively refer patients who present with unexplained neurological symptoms for these specialized tests. Blood samples can be collected at designated centers located within the Neurosciences block at the main AIIMS Delhi campus, as well as at the institute's Jhajjar campus, ensuring broader accessibility for patients from different regions.
